Witnesses across the country called the emergency services after seeing the object streak across the sky.
Many of the reports described the spectacle as a "flaming UFO" which followed a path straight across Spain from Barcelona and Aragón in the north-east to Extremadura in the west.
Far from being a sign of extraterrestrial visitation however the celestial visitor instead turned out to be a meteorite that is believed to have either burned up in the atmosphere or impacted at an unknown location on the Earth's surface.
"We think the meteorite may have flown over more areas of the country including Aragon, however, because it was pretty cloudy there we believe it may have been widely missed, and was only spotted when it emerged over a clear area that included Barcelona," said astrophysicist Jose Maria Trigo.
Authorities are now attempting to determine where it might have landed.
