RIDDLE OF ASIAN STONE DISCS 'FROM OUTER SPACE' | February 26, 1967 | The Los Angeles Herald-Examiner

Russian archaeologists are puzzling over a remarkable collection of stone discs, thousands of years old, found in the mountains bordering China and Tibet. So hard is it to explain them in terms of earthly experience that the archaeologists do not rule out the possibility that the discs may have come from outer space.

A total of 716 discs, like Stone Age 'gramophone records' have been picked up in recent years by men exploring caves in the Bayan-Kara-Ula mountain range, reports the Soviet Union's new English-language magazine, Sputnik.

Each disc has a central hole and irregular grooves spiraling out to the edge, but the report says (quite seriously) that the grooves are not sound tracks. It is thought that they are some form of ancient writing, but scientists ave so far failed to decipher them.

Chinese archaeologists estimate that the discs are about 12,000 years old, but have made no headway at all in trying to explain their purpose or how they came to be in the caves.

The Russians, who have examined some of the discs in a Moscow laboratory, claim to have made two important discoveries. One is that the discs contain certain traces of metal - particularly cobalt.

The second discovery, according to Vyacheslav Zaitsev, author of the Sputnik report, is that the discs when scrapped free of rock particles 'vibrate as if they carried an electric charge.

Zaitsev, who has spent 30 years collecting evidence that intelligent beings from outer space have had contact with the earth, believes that the discs may give substance to ancient Chinese legends of 'small, gaunt, yellow-faced men who came down the clouds' many centuries ago.

'In some of the Bayan-Kara-Ula caves,' he writes, 'archaeologists and speleologists have found 12,000-year old vestiges of graves and skeletons. The remains belong to human beings with huge craniums and underdeveloped skeletons.'

'The Chinese expeditions which discovered the burial grounds reported that they had found an extinct species of ape,' adds Zaitsev. 'But so far as is known apes do not bury each other in graves or write hieroglyphic symbols on stone discs.'

Mass Relocation For Chinese Villagers, For The World's Largest Telescope!

More than 9,000 Chinese villagers are leaving their homes to make way for aliens — or for the possible echoes of them, at least.

It is not a colonization plan from outer space. The Chinese government is relocating the villagers as it finishes building the world’s biggest radio telescope, one of whose purposes is to detect signs of extraterrestrial life.
The telescope will be 500 meters, or 1,640 feet, in diameter, making it by far the largest instrument of its kind in the world. It is called FAST, short for 500-meter aperture spherical telescope, and will cost an estimated 1.2 billion renminbi, or $184 million, to erect. The government hopes to complete it by September.

The mass relocation was announced on Tuesday in a report by Xinhua, the state news agency. The report said officials were moving 2,029 families, a total of 9,110 people, who live within about three miles of the telescope in the area of Pingtang and Luodian Counties in the southwestern province of Guizhou. Depopulating the area will create “a sound electromagnetic wave environment” for the telescope, Xinhua said.

Officials plan to give each person the equivalent of $1,800 for housing compensation, the report said. Guizhou is one of China’s poorest provinces.

Forced relocations for large projects are common across China, and so are complaints about them and about the amount of compensation offered. The Three Gorges Dam displaced more than one million people along the Yangtze River, for example, and the middle route of the gargantuan South-North Water Diversion Project has resulted in the relocation of 350,000 people to make way for a series of canals.

The Chinese government has announced ambitious plans for its space program, at a time when the American one’s direction is uncertain. China aims to put an astronaut on the moon and a space station in orbit. The FAST project is another important element in the larger plan.

Some official Chinese news reports about the project have emphasized the search for alien life, but the telescope’s main scientific work will be somewhat less romantic, gathering large amounts of new data on a wide range of physical phenomena in space including pulsars, galaxies, black holes and gas clouds.




The telescope is being built in a wide depression among karst hills. The site is far from any large city, and ideal for picking up radio transmissions from the sky, the Xinhua report said. Scientists began looking for a suitable site for the project in 1994.

If the truth is out there, some Chinese scientists are confident that the giant telescope will find it. For decades, professional and amateur scientists have combed the data gathered by the largest currently operational radio telescope in the world, the 53-year-old Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, hoping to find traces of intelligent life that, like mankind, may be advertising its existence to the universe through radio emissions. But they have yet to find any sign.




“With a larger signal receiving area and more flexibility, FAST will be able to scan two times more sky area than Arecibo, with three to five times higher sensitivity,” Li Di, a chief scientist with the National Astronomical Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily last year.

The new telescope should be able to pick up all kinds of radio signals more clearly from sources much farther away than can the Arecibo dish, which is 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) in diameter.



In November, scientists successfully tested the new telescope’s “retina,” which weighs 33 tons and is suspended 460 to 525 feet above the reflector dish, which was half-finished at the time, China Daily reported.

The telescope is made up of 4,500 mostly triangular panels that measure about 36 feet on a side, the report said, which together create an immense parabolic dish. Scientists will be able to adjust the panels’ positions to alter the shape of the dish and reflect radio signals from distant parts of the universe to a single focal point for detection and study.

Mr. Li told China Daily that engineers were aiming to install all the panels by June and complete debugging the antenna by September.

“Ultimately, exploring the unknown is the nature of mankind,” he said, adding that it was “as visceral as feeding and clothing ourselves.”

“It drives us to a greater future,” he said.

Chang'e-3 Landing Site Named "Guang Han Gong"

The landing site of China's first moon lander Chang'e-3 has been named "Guang Han Gong" or "Moon Palace", more than two years after the spacecraft made a successful soft-landing on the moon in December 2013.

Together with three nearby impact craters, the name was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) announced on Tuesday.

In Chinese mythology, Chang'e is the goddess of the moon while "Guang Han Gong" is the palace that houses Chang'e and her pet Yutu (Jade Rabbit).

The three craters were given the names Zi Wei, Tian Shi and Tai Wei, three constellations in traditional Chinese astrology, according to Liu Jizhong, director of the lunar exploration project of the SASTIND.

The lunar rover Yutu recently found a new type of basaltic rock that could shed light on lunar volcanism, according to an article published by Chinese scientists in the Nature Communications science journal last month.

A total of 22 lunar features have been given Chinese names. The first crater was named Zu Chongzhi after a famous Chinese mathematician in 1961.

Li Chunlai, a member of the naming committee for lunar features, said the coordinates of "Guang Han Gong", with a diameter of 154 meters, are 44.12 degrees north latitude and 19.51 degrees west longitude. The crater, along with other features, is included in the area covered by lunar rover Yutu.
Rita Schulz, chair of the IAU Division F WG Planetary System Nomenclature, said landing sites on the moon can only be officially named when they are the first landing sites for the country's spacecraft.

China Releases Spectacular Moon Images In TRUE HD

On Sunday, the China National Space Administration released hundreds of high-resolution, color images of the moon, offering an unprecedented look at our satellite.

Yutu, which means Jade Rabbit, first arrived on the moon in December 2013 aboard China’s Chang’e 3 lander. The spacecraft was the first to land there since the Soviets’ Luna 24 mission on Aug. 22, 1976.

Unfortunately, two weeks after it was deployed, Yutu suffered technical difficulties. It’s been unable to move since then, but it has continued to transmit information, including these stunning images.

What made China’s mission especially remarkable was that it was the first soft-landing on the moon in 37 years, since the Russians landed their Luna 24 probe back in 1976.

Today, anyone can create a user account on China’s Science and Application Center for Moon and Deepspace Exploration website to download the pictures themselves. The process is a bit cumbersome and the connection to the website is spotty if you’re accessing it outside of China.

Luckily, Emily Lakdawalla from the Planetary Society spent the last week navigating the Chinese database and is currently hosting a suite of China’s lunar images on the Planetary Society Website.

A UFO IN CHINA? No It's Just Simulator


A 9 meter high UFO has landed in China, Okay its NOT real UFO just a UFO-shaped model designed for the public to experience zero gravity weightlessness.

The 18.5 meter wide simulator popped up on Nov. 19, in the Nanjing Deji Plaza outdoor plaza for the public's enjoyment. Inside, visitors can experience a trip into the weightlessness of space thanks to a simulator.

China Enters The Search For ET With The Largest Telescope Ever Built!

Chinese scientists are constructing the world's biggest radio telescope, which will be more effective than any other at picking up weak messages from outer space that could be linked to intelligent life.
Assembly of the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, began in July and is expected to be completed in 2016.

Once finished, the reflector dish of the telescope will be 500 metres in diameter, replacing Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory, only 300 metres in diameter, as the world's largest.

The wider the dish, the more effective the telescope becomes at picking up weak messages from outer space.

Nan Rendong, the chief scientist of the FAST project, told the Xinhua news agency: "A radio telescope is like a sensitive ear, listening to tell meaningful radio messages from white noise in the universe."

"It is like identifying the sound of cicadas in a thunderstorm."

Rather than sitting above ground, the telescope's dish is sunken into a natural bowl-shaped valley in China's Guizhou province.

The geography of the surrounding hills and the remoteness of the site mean that there will be less interference from Earth-based radio signals.

The dish will be suspended slightly above ground level by a series of strong pillars and cables, allowing operators to move it and listen in to noises coming from different parts of space.

Although the dish is huge, the scientists may have a long wait if they want to pick up on alien radio signals.

The SETI Institute, which leads humanity's search for extraterrestrial life, has never picked up any message that conclusively comes from an alien civilisation, despite having a number of Earth and space-based telescopes at its disposal.



However, even if aliens don't make contact, radio telescopes smaller than FAST have been used in the discoveries of new planets, comets and pulsars.

The construction of the telescope also represents a huge advance for China's native space programme.
Despite the country's peaceful explorations into space only beginning in the 1990s, they have already sent a human into orbit, and are currently planning the launch of a space station and a manned mission to the Moon, both scheduled to take place at some point in the 2020s.

The development of the telescope will allow Chinese scientists to have their own first-hand data and equipment, rather than having to rely on information supplied by foreign space telescopes.

Wu Xiangping, the director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, told Xinhua: "Having a more sensitive telescope, we can recieve weaker and more distant radio messages."

"It will help us to search for intelligent life outside the galaxy and explore the origins of the universe."

‘Facebook of Everything’: IT Security Firm Says China Indexing US Officials

A security firm has come out with an idea as to how the information of millions of federal employees, stolen in a hack of the U.S. government personnel office, could be used.

CrowdStrike founder Dmitri Alperovitch told Fox News that the hackers — believed to have links to China — responsible infiltrating the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and other networks are building a “Facebook of Everything” that could be used “to embarrass you publicly and force you to work for the Chinese government.”

“It’s, in effect, a private version of Facebook with much more detail about your life than even Facebook has that the Chinese now have access to,” Alperovitch told the news outlet

The OPM breach affecting 22.5 million people was announced in June, and hackers were believed to have accessed a form known as Standard Form 86, which requires applicants to fill out deeply personal information about mental illnesses, drug and alcohol use, past arrests and bankruptcies.

They also require the listing of contacts and relatives, potentially exposing any foreign relatives of U.S. intelligence employees to coercion. Both the applicant’s Social Security number and that of his or her cohabitant is also required.

Shortly after the hack was announced, Evan Lesser, managing director of ClearanceJobs.com, said that these records would “sure make the job easier” to blackmail someone.

According to Fox News, sources close to the investigation worry that the information from the hack could affect more than just employees with ties to the federal government, but also their families. Alperovitch told Fox the hackers could target children to “try to get them to reveal some information about their parent’s work and use that, eventually, for espionage activities. Information that has been collected about them may be used decades later.”

James Clapper, the nation’s top intelligence official, told the House intelligence committee last week that a muted response to most cyberattacks has created a permissive environment in which hacking can be used as a tool short of war to benefit adversaries and inflict damage on the United States.

“Until such time as we do create both the substance and the mindset of deterrence, this sort of thing is going to continue,” Clapper said, speaking specifically about the hack of federal personnel information linked to China in which personal data on current and former U.S. government employees, contractors, job applicants and relatives was stolen. “We will continue to see this until we create both the substance and the psychology of deterrence.”

While Clapper expressed his fear that information could be used to expose or blackmail American intelligence operatives, he said the U.S. has yet to see any evidence of the data being used in that way.

The administration has yet to act in response to the OPM hack.

2,000-Year-Old Earthquake Detector Worked With Accuracy - China

The universe is full of mysteries that challenge our current knowledge. In "Beyond Science" Epoch Times collects stories about these strange phenomena to stimulate the imagination and open up previously undreamed of possibilities. Are they true? You decide.

In 132 A.D., Zhang Heng presented the Han court with the world’s first seismoscope. A 2005 replica was even said to detect earthquakes with the same precision as modern instruments.

Historical accounts tell of its great accuracy, though its precise design remains a mystery. The outer appearance and functioning is known for certain, but its inner workings remain open to speculation. The replicas have been built on the best guesses from such speculation.

The most common theory states that a pendulum inside the copper urn would move when an earthquake occurred, even if the quake was hundreds of miles away. The pendulum would hit a system of levers to open the mouth of one of the eight dragons on the outside of the urn. Each dragon’s mouth contained a bronze ball. This ball would roll out, landing in the mouth of a toad figurine below, making a loud clang.

A historical account described the ringing in the toad’s mouth to be so loud it could rouse the whole court from sleep, wrote Dr. Jan Pajak of the Wellington Institute of Technology in a paper prepared for the 2005 International Conference on Sensing Technology.

The dragon that had its mouth opened would be the one pointing in the direction of the earthquake. The eight dragons pointed east, west, north, south, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest respectively.

The invention was initially met with skepticism in its day, though Zhang was already a renowned scientist, selected to be the court’s chief astronomer. In 138 A.D., a bronze ball sounded the first alarm.

It indicated that the earthquake happened west of Luoyang, the capital city. No one had felt a quake in Luoyang, so the alarm was ignored, but a few days later, a messenger from west of Luoyang arrived in the city to report that his region had experienced an earthquake. The earthquake had occurred at the same time Zhang’s machine sounded the alarm. This city of Longxi, some 300 miles away, lay in ruins.

Feng Rui and Yu Yan-Xiang of the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration, deduced in 2006 that this first earthquake detected by Zhang’s machine was magnitude 7 in Longxi, with an epicenter at Tianshui on Dec. 13, 134 A.D.

The machine’s purpose was to detect earthquakes in distant regions so aid could be deployed. It worked until the death of its inventor, but apparently the device was so complex only Zhang could keep up with its maintenance effectively.

The seismoscope was called Houfeng didong yi, the “instrument for measuring the seasonal winds and the movements of the Earth.” Modern attempts at replication have met with varying success, and all were built on the use of inertia, a principle integral to modern seismographs.

Dr. Pajak explains this use of intertia: “In this principle an earthquake shakes a frame of an instrument, so that this frame is displaced in relation to an inertial pendulum, while this displacement is registered as the indication of an earthquake.”

Attempts to Replicate

In 1939, Japanese scientist Akitsune Imamura built a replica showing the device to be effective, according to Hong-Sen Yan in the book “Reconstruction Designs of Lost Ancient Chinese Machinery.”

However, wrote Hong-Sen, “in some circumstances the direction of an earthquake’s epicenter was found to be at right angles to the dropped ball.”

In 2005, several scientists from various disciplines at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Museum, and China Earthquake Administration declared a new replica to be the best yet.

“It represents our current utmost understanding of the ancient Didong instrument,” said Teng Jiwen, a research fellow at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, according to a report from that time by state-run media People’s Daily.

The replica reportedly responded to the reproduced waves of four actual earthquake events in Tangshan, Yunnan, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and Vietnam. Tested against modern earthquake graphs, the replica was shown to be accurate and its shape fit that described in historical texts.


The Inner Workings

Hong-Sen cited a passage from a contemporary biography of Zhang, the first design specification left to us in historical texts: “There is one pillar (du zhu) in the center of the interior and eight transmitting rods near the pillar.”

Transmitting rods would refer to channels through which some object would be transported, explained Hong-Sen, but nothing more specific is written about the rods.

Dr. Pajak has another theory. He wrote that the machine has been described in historical texts as containing water, as having water flow out of the dragons’ mouths like a fountain.

He hypothesized that the water flowed smoothly (as opposed to turbulently), a characteristic known as laminar flow. The shape of the chamber (parabolic) was designed to deflect vibrations coming from the earthquake zone. The deflected vibrations would focus on the inlet of the pipe in the appropriate direction, causing the water that had been washing around the metal ball to push the ball out of the dragon’s mouth.

Robert Reitherman, executive director of the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering, expressed skepticism concerning the historical accounts of the machine’s accuracy in his book, “Earthquakes and Engineers: An International History.”

He wrote: “At a close distance, the whole instrument would be so severely shaken that the balls on multiple perches would have jostled loose. … At a [far] distance, ground motion from an earthquake does not leave clear footprints indicating the direction from whence those vibrations came, because the ground shakes in various directions rather chaotically by the time it reaches the instrument.”

If this machine worked as well as historical accounts describe, and if the successes of some modern replicas hint that the machine could work with such precision, it seems Zhang’s genius remains out of our grasp for now.

Some of Zhang’s other accomplishments include calculating pi (π) as being between 3.1466 and 3.1622, refining a time-keeping device know as an “inflow clepsydra,” and applying hydraulic motive power to rotate an astronomical instrument known as an armillary sphere.

2,100-Year-Old King's Mausoleum Discovered in China

A 2,100-year-old mausoleum built for a king named Liu Fei has been discovered in modern-day Xuyi County in Jiangsu, China, archaeologists report.

Liu Fei died in 128 B.C. during the 26th year of his rule over a kingdom named Jiangdu, which was part of the Chinese empire.

Although the mausoleum had been plundered, archaeologists found that it still contained more than 10,000 artifacts, including treasures made of gold, silver, bronze, jade and lacquer. They also found severallife-size chariot and dozens of smaller chariots.

UFO CRASHES IN CHINA - EXTRA NEWS SOURCES

ARE THESE ALIEN CRAFTS? ALLEGEDLY  A FIRE BALL OF FALLING UFOs

Resident in the Heilongjiang province in China reported seeing three UFOs darting across the sky and apparently one of them came crashing down into in a man’s vegetable garden.
According to Chinanews.com, villagers in Mengchang saw three objects falling from the sky this morning. Soon after they heard a “huge piercing sound,” and a huge ball of flame came crashing down into the vegetable garden of one of the villagers.
What they found in the garden looks straight out of a science-fiction movie. It appears to be a large metal ball covered by a layer of jagged material. According to China Radio International,  China Central Television news is reporting the object to be about 2 and a half feet wide and weighing nearly 90 pounds.


The area has been secured and an investigation is underway. Villagers have taken pictures of the object, which remains unidentified.

Chinanews.com has suggested that the object could be related to the failure of a Russian rocket at about the same time. The rocket launch was at 3:42 am local time in Kazakhstan, which is 5:42 am in Beijing. The rocket failed 540 seconds into the flight at an altitude of nearly 100 miles.
The Proton-M rocket was carrying an advanced satellite. However, the head of the Russian national space agency, Roscosmos, told Russia Today the rocket and cargo burned up in the atmosphere and should not have caused any damage on the ground.
The Heilongjiang province is a long distance from Kazakhstan, but the timing is coincidental.

The internet being what it is, of course the rocket’s demise is being linked to UFOs. In the video below a faint point of light can be seen crossing the screen at about 45 seconds into the video. It goes from right to left. Some people have suggested that it is a UFO. It also looks like it could be a star.


Earlier this week UFOs were blamed for the Chinese moon rover malfunctioning. Could this amount to a full scale alien invasion of the far east? Or could it be a case of over active imaginations?
Just in case it is aliens, Mashable has posted a story today about military plans on dealing with unlikely events including attacks by aliens or zombies. In it they reference a book by scientists and space consultants titled An Introduction to Planetary Defense: A Study of Modern Warfare Applied to Extra-Terrestrial Invasion. It might be time for all of us to order a copy. I just placed my order today.
I just hope they don’t invade too soon. I opted for the cheaper shipping, and it will take a week or so to get here.

UPDATE 5/19/2014:
Discovery News thinks they have discovered what crashed in China last week, and it is not the first time this culprit has been mistaken for an alien object. Discovery writes:
According an AFP report, space debris was found near Qiqihar city in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, located on Russia’s far east border. Investigators associated with the China National Space Administration recovered “parts from a carrier rocket or a satellite” that “appeared to have fallen from the sky on Friday,” said the Chinese Xinhua news agency.
Photographs have been released of a damaged spherical object, which resembles a Composite Overwrap Pressure Vessel (COPV). COPVs are commonly used by spacecraft to store pressurized liquid fuel and are often constructed of steel or titanium and wrapped in Kevlar — the same material used for bulletproof vests. These objects are therefore very tough can can often survive the extreme heating of reentry.
These falling space orbs have, in the past, caused some excitement as to their extraterrestrial origin, but after expert analysis they are quickly identified as space junk.
