Icelandic commission rules video of mythical ‘Loch Ness’ sea serpent ‘is real’

A video of a creature described as Iceland’s Loch Ness Monster has been ruled to be real by a commission established to investigate after the video went viral in 2012.

The eerie video seems to show a gigantic scaly creature swimming through the lake water – and was shot through a window by Hjörtur E. Kjerúlf in February 2012.

The huge beast in the video tallied with local folk tales regarding lake Lagarfljót near Egilsstaðir in east Iceland, which told of  a vast sub-surface monster which once rose to the surface and ate people.
The giant serpent, Lagarfljótsormurinn, has been the subject of folk tales since the fourteenth century. The appearance of the serpent is supposed to foretell disaster.

The footage rapidly went viral, being viewed eight million times, and the local area council set up a ‘truth commission’ to decide whether it was real. It narrowly voted that the video was authentic, which means that wins a prize of £2,700.

Since the video went viral, foreign film crews have flooded the area, hoping to catch a glimpse of the monster.

Nigel Watson, a paranormal expert and author of ‘The Haynes UFO Investigations Manual’ says, ‘One of the biggest mysteries is how to pronounce Lagarfljótsormurinn! Throughout the world nearly every lake has its own monster, and stories associated with it, that go back into distant time.’

Watson says, ‘They are like the aquatic version of UFOs. Indeed, like UFOs sceptics find a wide variety of mundane explanations to account for these folk tales and eyewitnessreports. And, like UFOs evidence for their existence is equally ambiguous.’

Some have suggested that the creature is some form of large fish. Others have speculated that the ‘Truth Commission’ may in fact be more concerned with the financial impact of tourism than the factual truth of the monster captured on film.
